SANDON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

At the annual meeting of the President (the Countess of Harrowby), and Mrs. Farr gave a report of the half-yearly meeting held at Stafford. The whole of the officials were re-elected, with the addition of Mrs. Haynes and Mrs. Key on the committee. Mrs. Merricks and Mrs. Haynes were the hostesses and also responsible for the social half-hour.

EX-P.O.W.’s DEATH

The funeral took place at Sandon Church of Gunner H. Lockley, who had been a prisoner of war in the Far East since the fall of Singapore. He had been in the Regular Army and was called up on the outbreak of war. Much sympathy is felt for his widowed mother. He was 39 years of age and was well known in the district. The Vicar (the Rev. J.D. Charlesworth) took the service. The bearers were members of the Sandon and District British Legion. There were many floral tributes, including one from his mother, neighbours and friends, the Burston C.C., Sandon C.C., and the British Legion.
