The Earl and Countess of Harrowby and Lord and Lady Sandon were present at the marriage at All Saints’ Parish Church, Sandon, on Saturday, of Mr. Alfred Edward Toney, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Toney, 17 Argyle Avenue, Bolehall, Tamworth, and Miss Vera Evelyn Askey, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Askey, Estate Works, Sandon, Staffs. The Rev. W. Dodd, vicar of Weston-on-Trent, performed the ceremony, during which the hymns, “Lead us, Heavenly Father, lead us” and “Thine for ever, God of Love,” were sung. The bride, who was given away by her father, was tastefully attired in a suit of misty blue, with navy blue accessories, wearing a necklace of pearls (the gift of the bridegroom) and a spray of pink carnations and heather (the gift of the Countess of Harrowby). She carried an ivory-bound Prayer Book. The bridesmaid, Miss Pamela Lloyd (cousin), wore of dress of dusty pink, with navy accessories, blue pendant (the gift of the bridegroom) and spray of red carnations and heather (the gift of the Countess of Harrowby). Mrs. Henry Charles Toney (brother of the bridegroom) acted as best man. The Earl and Countess of Harrowby signed the register. The bride was presented with silver horseshoes by Christine West (niece of the bridegroom) and Joan Brown (god-child of the bride). After a reception at the Sandon Village Institute, the bride and bridegroom left for the honey-moon in the Lake District. The bridge’s father has been clerk of the works of the Sandon estate for 38 years.

The presents were beautiful and numerous, including several cheques, and gifts from the Earl and Countess of Harrowby. Sir Walter Congreve, Lodge R.A.O.B., bride’s colleagues at English Electric Co. (Stafford), and a handsome combined present from friends resident in Gayton, Marston, Enson and Sandon.
