During morning lessons Miss Watson noticed smoke pouring from behind asbesto panels at the back of a coke-burning stove in the children’s dining room. She went at once to the nearest telephone a quarter-of-a-mile away and summoned the Stafford Fire Brigade. They responded immediately and in less than 15 minutes had the outbreak under control. Had the telephone been installed in the school much time would have been saved.
