FARMER’S DEATH IN FIELD

Discovery at Sandon

We regret to record the death of Mr. J.T. Johnson, of Burston Cottage, Sandon, which occurred suddenly yesterday afternoon. He was 73.

Apparently in his normal health, Mr. Johnson left home after lunch to “look over his stock” on his farm. He did not return and a searcher discoved him dead in a field. His black cocker spaniel was with him.

Farmed 50 years

A prominent member of the farming community, Mr. Johndon was one of the oldest tenants on the Sandon Estate, where he had farmed for nearly 50 years.

Much sympathy has been extended to his wife. She is a daughter of the late Mr. Woolf, who farmed at Hardiwick, also on the Sandon Estate.

Mr. Johnson was present last Tuesday at Stone Auction yard in his capacity as farmer grader. He was a past Chairman of Stone branch of the National Farmers’ Union.

He was a Vice-President of Sandon Village Club and Sandon Cricket Club and was an active member of Stone Crown Hotel Bowling Club, of which he was Greens’ Secretary until a season or so ago.
