DEATH OF MR. H. BENTLEY, OF SANDON

Long Service to Church and Village

The death took place on Sunday after a short illness of Mr. Harry Bentley, former proprietor of the village stores at Sandon, who for many years had taken a prominent part in the life of the village. Mr. Bentley, who had lived in Sandon all his life, retired recently from business. He was a keen Churchman, and acted as warden both for the present Vicar (the Rev. J.D. Charlesworth) and his predecessor (the Rev. F.E. Copplestone, now of Widworthy, Devon). He was also secretary of the Parochial Church Council and the freewill offering fund. The deceased was a vice-president of the Sandon Village Club, of which he was for 20 years secretary until ill-health caused him to relinquish the position, and in his younger days he was a keen cricketer and secretary of the Sandon Cricket Club. He was unmarried.

The funeral took place at Sandon Church on Wednesday, the service being conducted by the Vicar and the Rev. F. R. Copplestone. The family mourners were Miss Bentley (niece), Mr. R. O. McIlwrick (cousin), Mr. and Mrs. A. McIlwrick (cousins), Mrs. A. Bentley and Miss M. Bentley (Stafford); and M[r]. and Mrs. L. McIlwrick. Four members of the Parish Council—Messrs. J. Cadman, H. Adams, jun., R. Lindop and P. Holford—were the bearers, and others present included Mr. T.W. Knowles (representing the Earl and Countess of Harrowby), Mr. S. Kent (chairman of the Parish Council), Mr. J.T. Johnson (representing the farmers of the Sandon Estate), Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Farr, and Miss Farr, Mrs. Charlesworth, Mr. C. Bentley, Mrs. and Mrs. J. Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Berrisford, and Messrs. H. Askey, Sargent, T. Poyner, and G. Cope, W. Davidson, and J. Tansley.

Many floral tributes included those from the Earl and Countess of Harrowby, children of Sandon School, members of the choir, members of the Sandon Cricket Club, Sandon W.I., Sandon Village Club, and Sandon Parochial Church Council.
