SANDON

MOTOR-CYCLE ACCIDENT.—Mr. T. Aaronricks, of Sandon, manager of Bradley’s clothing shop, Stone, while cycling to business on Monday, collided with another moto-cycle near Carr House Bridge. Mr. Aaronricks received severe injuries, and was conveyed to the Stafford Infirmary. He is progressing as well as can be expected.

CHOIR CONCERT.—On Tuesday evening the Sandon Paris Choir gave its annual concert in the Village Club. There was a very good attendance. The programme included solos, glees, and quartets by the Choir, and a sketch. Selections on the saxophone were given by Mr. Redmond, of Stone, who caused much merriment by a burlesque entertainment. The glees, etc. were rendered in a very creditable manner. Mrs. Foster sang “Love’s Coronation,” and was heard again to advantage in duets with the Vicar, “I know a Bank,” and “Under the Weeping Willow.” Mr. Rollitt rendered, in a pleasing manner, the monologue “Devil May Care.” The choirboys sang “Land of My Fathers,” “The Barley Mow,” and “Ladye Fayre.” Mrs. Chawner officiated at the piano, and Mr. J. Wright conducted. The second half of the programme consisted of a sketch, entitled “The scamp next door.” The artistes, all of whom did exceptionally well, were Miss Farr (a garden loving, elderly spinster), Miss E. Farr (her charming niece), Mr. E. Rollett (the Scamp), Miss May Wright (the Maid), and Mr. A Hine (the Butcher).

FUNERAL OF AN OLD SOLDIER.—On Saturday afternoon the remains of the late Mr. Abel Astle were laid to rest in the little churchyard of Salt. The deceased was 64 years of age, and for many years was a highly respected workman on the Earl of Harrowby’s Sandon estate. He was formerly a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery, and served in India and Egypt. When war broke out, he volunteered for service, and joined the Field Artillery of the North Midland Brigade. He served in France for over three years, and the severe hardships he endured played havoc with his constitution, and since returning to civil life he had been an invalid. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. E.A. Chattock, vicar of Salt, assisted by the Rev. F.O.N. Fisher, chaplain to the Sandon Estate War Club. Mr. Winn, an old Army comrade, impressively sounded the Last Post. The Coffin, covered with the Union Jack, was borne by four Past Grandmasters of the Earl of Harrowby Lodge of Oddfellows—Bros. W. Alcock, J. Cadman, E. Green, and J. Tansley. Besides the relatives the following attended the service: Lord and Lady Sandon, Messrs. T.W. Knowles (chairman of Sandon British Legion Branch), J.A. Walker (secretary), T. Edwards, and F. Downing, J.P. Farr, W. Tansley, H. Johnson, and Roberts. Wreaths were sent by the Earl and Countess of Harrowby, Viscount and Lady Sandon, and Lady Frances Ryder, the Sandon Estate War Club, and the Sandon and District British Legion.
