GIFTS TO SANDON CHURCH

Altar Vessels Dedicated

The Rural Dean of Staffordshire (Preb. T.F. Royds, Rector of Haughton) officiated at a service in Sandon Parish Church on Sunday evening when a chalice and paten presented to the church by Col. W.A. G. Coldwell in memory of his grandfather and father, both of whom were former vicars of Sandon, were dedicated.

The service was conducted by the Vicar of Sandon (the Rev. W.B. Buckland), and the Earl of Harrowby (Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire) and the Countess of Harrowby were present. With them were Col. and Mrs. Coldwell, who now live at Craven Arms, Salop.

Preaching on the text “Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness,” Preb. Royds remarked that his family had many connections with Sandon, and especially the Coldwells, and for that reason he had come to perform the dedication ceremony. Worship, beauty and holiness, he continued, were symbolised by the beautiful chalice and paten they were dedicating. Sandon church was worth the very best that art could produce, and they had got it.

The gifts, of silver gilt, are copies of a chalice and paten dated 1527, now in Trinity College, Cambridge, and they commemorate the Rev. William Edward Coldwell, and his son, the Rev. William St. George Coldwell, who were incumbents from 1827 to 1898.aa

Mr. E.R. Bridgeman was the organist.
