SANDON

Mr. A.E. Harvey.—The funeral took place at Sandon Church on April 26 of Mr. Albert Edward Harvey, of Hilderstone Road, Sandon. He was 73. Mr. Harvey, who had lived in Sandon for the past 15 years, had previously lived at Milwich. He was employed as gardener at Sandon Hall. The service was taken by the Rev. B. Buckland.

Mourners were Mrs. Harvey (widow), Alice and Neville (son-in-law and daughter), Mrs. Kent (neice), Mr. and Mrs. Bills, Mrs. Howell, Mr. Lindop (representing the British Legion), Mr. S. Kent, Mr. J. Kent, Mr. and Mrs. Hines, Mr. F.E. Grosvenor, Mrs. Keeling, Mrs. Chell, Mrs. Buckland and others.

The organist was Mr. W.B. Spink. Bearers were Mr. H. Howell, J. Mills, T. Embrey, and W. Askey.  Messrs. G. H. Bennett, of Swynnerton, were the undertakers.

Whist Drive.—The Sandon and Burston branch of the Stafford and Stone Conservative and Unionist Association held its annual whist drive in the Parish Room on Friday. Attendance was good. M.C. for the evening was Mr. Peter Holford. Refreshments were served at the interval by the ladies’ committee.

The first six winners of both ladies’ and gentlemen’s sections qualify to play in the final whist drive to be held in the Borough Hall, Stafford on May 19th. Winners were:--

Ladies: 1. Mrs. A Wood; 2. Mrs. J.S. Mellor; 3. Miss G. Smith; 4. Mrs. Williamson; 5. Mrs. M.G. Bennett; 6. Mrs. D.M. Gill.

Gentlemen: 1. Mrs [sic] K.S. Sarjent; 2. Mrs. [sic] Hodson (M.); 3. Mr. S. Myatt; 4. Mr. J. Hilditch; 5. Mr. R.W. Lindop; 6. Mr. G Allsop. A raffle was won by Miss Olive Bennett. Prizes were presented by Mrs. A. Jerrett.

W.I. The April meeting was held on Wednesday last week in the Parish Room. Mrs. Dix presided. Advice on the care of domestic pets was given by Supt Anthony of the RSPCA. An excellent report on the W.I. quarterly meeting recently held was presented by Miss. C. Woolley. The competition for home-made sweets was won equally by Mrs. Locke and Mrs. Jones, who shared points.

A short whist drive followed. Hostesses were Mesdames Foster, Donaldson, Fowler and Greer.

Easter Vestry.—The Easter vestry was held on Thursday in the Parish Room. The Vicar (the Rev. W.B. Buckland) presided. The Church accounts were presented by Mr. James Cadman (people’s warden). They showed a satisfactory balance. The appeal fund, Free Will offering and Benefice Fund accounts, were also presented and adopted. The Vicar expressed his thanks to all responsible for these accounts. Mr. J. Sarjent (Smallrise), was re-appointed by the Vicar as his warden. Mr. James Cadman was again elected as people’s warden. The sidesmen were re-elected en bloc, with the addition of Col. A. Jerrett, Mr. C.C. Welsh, Mr. G. Hirst, and Mr. W.J. Deauville. The Church Council was re-elected with the addition of Col. Jerrett, Miss S. Jerrett, and Mr. C.C. Welsh. Dr. H.T.D. Bocking was re-appointed delegate to the Diocesan Conference and Mr. W. Sarjent and Dr. Bocking as delegates to the Ruridecanal and the Archidiaconal Conference.
