CLOCK MARKS JUBILEE of Sandon Village Club

June 2nd was an eventful day for the Village Club, Sandon for then the Earl of Harrowby unveiled an electric clock and tablet suitably inscribed to celebrate the jubilee of the club which he had himself opened in 1905.

The Countess of Harrowby watched the ceremony from her car. Viscount and Viscountess Sandon were also present.

Lord Harrowby said he had watched with great interest the growth of the village. He recalled that when he first came, there were cottages where the present Dog and Doublet Hotel stands, and that the cottage[s] were lit with tallow candles.

After the ceremony, club members had dinner in the main hall of the club.

Mr. T.W. Knowles (agent) recalled that the first village clubroom was a room over the present Post Office. Later, the club moved to the old Dog and Doublet Hotel. Lord Harrowby was convinced these arrangements were inadequate and decided to build the present club and present it to the village.

Unfortunately, the cub was not now used as much as it should be, this no doubt being due to better bus services, the radio, cinemas and television.

Lord Sandon spoke of the Club’s good fortune in having such excellent officers.

Mr. Brittain Adams proposed the toast to “The Club,” and Mr. Peter Holford, secretary, paid tribute to many members who had given special service particularly Mr. J. Cadman, Treasurer for 15 years, a founder member and now a Vice-President.

After dinner, a dance was held, the M.C. being Mr. R. Clay.

The dinner was arranged by the ladies’ committee.
