Sandon Fete Raises £165 For Village Funds

After weeks of sunshine, rain was an unwelcome intruder at Sandon Village fete, held at Sandon Hall, the home of the Earl and Countess of Harrowby, on Monday. Crowds sheltered under the trees and in the conservatory to hear the fete declared open by Viscountess Sandon.

The fete, an annual Bank Holiday village occasion, was this year, for the first time, held in aid of the village clubs and parish room.

Viscountess Sandon, who was introduced by Mr. James Cadman, said that both the clubs and the parish room were important parts of village life.

The opener was thanked by Mr. Tom Hammond, who also thanked the Earl and Countess of Harrowby. The Viscountess was presented with a bouquet by Gillian Powner.

Despite the weather, stalls and sideshows were busy and about £165 was raised.

The fete was organised by a committee with Mr. R.G. Johnson as Chairman, Mr. P. Halford, Secretary, and Mr. G. Hurst, Treasurer.

Two pigs—one given by Messrs. John and Roger Siddall and the other by Mr. T. Hammond—were won by: 2, Mr. Reay, of Hixon (for third year); a Mr. Owen, of Stafford. An iced cake, given by Messrs. Spencer, of Weston, was won by Mr. Rushton, of Rugeley. A box of chocolates, given by Mr. George Hirst, won by Mrs. F. Downing.

The stallholders and other helpers were:—

Fancy stall: Mesdames Holford, Charlesworth and Miss Cheadle; second-hand, Miss K. Bentley, Mrs. T. Tipper and Mrs. F. Warhurst; produce, Mesdames Kent, Powner, Shepherd and Sargent; home-made, Mesdames Batley, Berrisford, Bocking and Miss K. Phillips; flowers, Mrs. John Wright, Miss May Wright, Miss G. Powner and Jean Tipper.

[…] Sandon lost their away game with Dormans, despite making a promising battling start. Dormans were all out for 102. Sandon’s early batting saw them up to 46 for three, but a collapse set in and they were all out for 78. Hill (five for 20) and Buck (four for 21) put Dormans on the right way.

Sandon seconds were too good for Stafford Juniors, who were all out for 40, Eric Myatt taking five for 12, and J. Martin three for 15. Sandon’s 101 for eight included 35 from R. Clay and 26 from M. Middleton.
