7th April 1900 D&LA

The funeral of the Earl of Harrowby took place on Friday at Sandon Church, Stone, Staffordshire. The mourners included the Countess of Harrowby, Mr. J.H. Dudley Ryder (now Viscount Sandon), and Mr. Archibald and Mr. Edward Ryder (nephews); the Rev. Algernon Ryder, Major Dudley Ryder, and Mr. Ragland Somerset. The body was placed in the family vault near the ancient church. By request, there were no wreaths, and the service was of a very unostentatious character save for the very large gathering of those who knew and respected the late Peer. The service was conducted by the Bishop of Lichfield, assisted by the Rev. Guy Warne (vicar of Sandon), the Rev. Algernon Ryder (nephew), and the Rev. Provost Talbot. Viscount Sandon proceeded to Mentone on Saturday to join his father, the new Earl, who is in delicate health, and was too unwell to attend the funeral.
